Information on Disability for Empowerment Advocacy And Support

IDEAAS is dedicated to giving people with disabilities the information and tools they need to take care of themselves as well as they can, as independently as possible, with as many supports as are needed. It will support the success of other grassroots projects as time goes on whose mission matches our own.

The Katrina Disability Info website is a comprehensive and up-to-date compendium of resources to help people with disabilities cope with disasters, as well as aiding them in finding support for their everyday needs. It was begun as a grassroots response to the failure of government to help the disability community after the hurricane Katrina demolished the gulf coast. It has topical pages, in addition to one page for each state, territory & commonwealth.

The project's success can largely be credited to the volunteers from across the U.S., who use their local knowledge to add in-depth coverage to particular regions and disabilities. More volunteers are needed to help fill in gaps and bring specialized expertise to the community.

Sexuality has been a neglected area in supporting people with disabilities to live meaningful, independent lives. And yet, what is more central to autonomy and humanity than our sexuality? Since 1994, sexsupport.org has tried to fill this gap by providing frank, accurate, and interactive information on sexuality for people with disabilities and those without, empowering them to help fulfill their dreams to be healthy, responsible sexual beings.

reel life film festival logo

Film is a powerful way to communicate across cultures and experiences. Reel Life: A Disability Film Festival is about celebrating the lives of people with disabilities and the rich and varied disability culture that has developed to express the unique experiences and perspectives of the disability community. It is also about repairing the fractures and misunderstandings between people with different types of disabilities and about enlightening the non-disabled world about the reality of life with disability. In it's two years it has shown over seventy films from countries from all over the world depicting people with every facet of disability.

Ashley X

Ashleyx in 2000, take from her parents blog

A little girl who may become the symbol a symbol of disability rights for this generation. Her parents thought she would be happier and easier to care for if she stayed the size of a child forever, but did they consider her rights and dignity as a person? Would they have done what they did to her if she was a boy? - did not have a cognitive disability? - had a hospital ethics committee to seek approval from that included people with disabilities? - had access to services and a disability community that could help them cope with raising a chld with complex disabilities.
