Information for Victims of Hurricane Katrina - A Message from Commissioner Richard P. Mills
http://usny33.nysed.gov/katrina/
"All of New York State welcomes those from the Gulf States who need care, shelter, food, education and the opportunity to rebuild. We invite them into our neighborhoods and schools and colleges. We will do all we can to help them resume normal lives. School districts across New York, under the Federal McKinney-Vento Homeless Education Assistance Act, will expedite preparations to accept school children displaced by Hurricane Katrina. This will help minimize the disruption caused to children in grades Kindergarten through 12th.
Many New York State colleges and universities (public, independent and proprietary) are offering expedited admissions and waivers or assistance with tuition and fees to students, who were attending colleges and universities in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama, and who have had their educations interrupted as a result of Hurricane Katrina. Our public universities have been directed to offer immediate admission to all displaced students and will be providing in-state tuition rates at all 64 State University of New York (SUNY) and all 20 City University of New York (CUNY) campuses to displaced students.

NYS Hurricane Katrina Assistance Hotline
The New York State Hurricane Katrina Assistance Hotline at 1-888-7-NYS AID is the number New Yorkers should call if they are able to offer long-term and vacant housing resources that could be used to house evacuees from Hurricane Katrina. These resources will be included in a national inventory that FEMA is developing. In addition, any Katrina victims that are already in New York State should call 1-888-7-NYS AID to register with the State to ensure that they can receive the support and benefits they deserve.
