First Link is a little like Netcare, in that you need to go through them for referral to food cupboards, free clothing, and Medical Clinics. However, I like them better than Netcare, because they are less self rightious, and referals can be made over the phone...You do not have to go to an office and wait for hours to see a counselor. I find the process a little more confidential and therefore more dignified. Sometimes the wait on the phone can approach 20 minutes, but they are so helpful, it is worth it.
"I can do no great things, only small things with great Love." It's my favorite quote, I think it is appropriate to the mission of the Website, and it might inspire some people. Mother Theresa said it.

Single Women only - no children. They have 1 handicapped accessable room, but they frankly didn't sound all that excited about the prospect of accepting women with disabilities. Legally, I know that they would have to adjust, but I would feel better if they had sounded a little more open to the possibility. I know I don't like to go places where I am not welcome, whether or not I have a right to be there, but that is just my editorial comment. You probably can tell by now that I enjoy greatly editorializing on , well, everything.
Faith Mission (614) 224-6617 ext.2151
Single Men only -no children. They have no handicapped accessible room, but could accpt PWD's as lond as they could "get around." (their words...the guy I talked to was either unwilling or unable to define what he meant by that. I have left several messages with the Director, but no one has gotten back to me. I will keep trying. Tenacity is one of my middle names.)
Faith On Eighth (614) 299-3192
599 East Eighth Avenue Columbus Ohio 43201
Single Men only-no children. They are handicapped accessible and, to quote the man on the phone "will do anything we have to to help any brother in need." I wanted to crawl through the phone and kiss him.
Hospitality Network Incorporated (614) 228-9211
Only shelter in town that I could find that takes families. Apparently they have a day center where people hang out, as the name would suggest, during the day, and then the clients are taken to one of several areas around town at night to sleep. The day centre is handicapped accessible and some of the night sleeping areas are. They seemed semi-open to the idea of taking children with disabilities rather than parents with disabilities...The small minded excuse for a human being that I initially talked to alluded to the opinion that parents with disabilities would not be able to care for their own children. Boy, did I guide her gently down the path of enlightenment on that one, and will mention her lack of scope to her director when I go on my tour.
Choices (614) 224-4663
DOMESTIC VIOLENCE SHELTER for Women and children only
This one probably won't be able to be used much, but you never know. There is 1 handicapped accessible room, but the woman on the phone expressed the belief that women with disabilities are so rarely victims of domestic abuse, she didn't think it was necessary to have such a facility. I bit my tongue on that one. From what I understand, although she wasn't terribly clear, that there may be a problem housing boy children under the age of 18 if they are "sexually mature." I asked her to clarify, and what they would do under such a situation, but she obviously decided that silence was the better part of valour and dummied up.
