Statewide Press Releases
HARRISBURG, Pa., Aug. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Governor Edward G. Rendell today announced that Commonwealth resources have been mobilized to assist the recovery and rescue of victims of Hurricane Katrina along the Alabama,
Mississippi and Louisiana Gulf Coast, and urged citizens of Pennsylvania to support to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund, which will assist Victims of Hurricane Katrina and other disasters around the world each day. "Resources from the Commonwealth have been made available to support the search and rescue missions as part of ongoing efforts to help families
throughout the Gulf Coast Region who are struggling to cope with HurricaneKatrina's deadly effects," said Governor Rendell. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims of Hurricane Katrina." The Governor has mobilized PA Task Force 1 Urban Search and Rescue (USAR)unit, which will begin rescue and recovery operations in the affected areas. PA Task Force 1 is a highly trained unit that responds to the collapse of large structures and other hazardous rescue missions. In addition, several members of the PA One Region 13 Disaster Medical Assistance Team (DMAT) were dispatched to Biloxi, Mississippi, along with the Erie PA Two DMAT team, which was deployed to New Orleans, Louisiana. The Governor dispatched PA National Guardsman along with a Satellite Communications (SATCOM) package to provide voice and data communications to affected areas. This package provides vital communications due to the loss of landline and cellular communications."Pennsylvanians experienced Mother Nature's powerful effects this year when floods ravaged our state, and I encourage citizens to help their
neighbors in need," said Governor Rendell. "A small donation to the Red Cross can go a long way to help ease the financial burden that a natural disaster of this magnitude can leave." A donation to the Disaster Relief Fund enables the Red Cross to provide food, shelter, counseling and other assistance to thousands of disaster victims, and can make a difference in the lives of people who depend on the Red Cross after a large disaster like Hurricane Katrina. The American Red Cross is currently mobilizing 1,900 volunteers, Red Cross workers and resources to aide victims of Hurricane Katrina. The Red Cross provides a safe haven for thousands of evacuees in hundreds of Red Cross shelters around the world.
To make a donation to the Disaster Relief Fund, please call 1-800-HELP-NOW
or visit the Red Cross Web site at http://www.redcross.org.
While resources from Pennsylvania have been requested and dispatched, Emergency Management directors in the states affected by Hurricane Katrina are asking that people do not self-dispatch to help. Concerned residents who would like to help are asked to make a donation to their preferred Voluntary Organization Active in Disaster (VOAD).To see a complete listing of VOADs visit http://www.nvoad.org. The PA Emergency Management Agency (PEMA) is coordinating the commonwealth response to Hurricane Katrina with federal, state, county and local emergency managers and officials.Additional flood safety information and weather updates can be found on the PEMA website at http://www.pema.state.pa.us .

Governor Rendell Establishes Service Centers To Aid Hurricane Katrina Victims(Back to Top)
Hotline set up to direct evacuees to services across state
HARRISBURG -- Governor Edward G. Rendell today designated the Department of Labor & Industry’s statewide system of CareerLink offices as a point of access for state agency services to aid Hurricane Katrina evacuees in Pennsylvania.
A toll-free hotline - 1-800-345-2555 - is available weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. to direct Hurricane Katrina victims to the nearest CareerLink office where staff will assess their needs and connect them to appropriate services to meet those needs. Locating the nearest CareerLink can also be done online at www.pacareerlink.state.pa.us.
“Pennsylvania is committed to assisting all of the disaster victims regardless of when they arrive or how long they stay,” Governor Rendell said. “I have directed all state agencies to be prepared to provide individualized assistance to ensure that the needs of evacuees are met without red tape. No evacuee will be unserved, underserved or turned away. In addition to the CareerLink offices, reception centers and shelters have been set up in Philadelphia and Allegheny County.
“CareerLink offices are ideal to serve as a point of service because they are located throughout the commonwealth and they already have an extensive network of community support. CareerLink staff will connect evacuees with services offered locally. Our goal is to help evacuees in every way possible.”
From 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., CareerLinks across the state will be available to help meet evacuees’ needs ranging from food, shelter and medical care to finding a job. CareerLink staffs are prepared to coordinate services with state agencies such as the Departments of Health and Public Welfare and relief agencies such as the Red Cross.
Phones and Internet-connected computer resource rooms in the CareerLink offices are available so evacuees can access online services such as registering for aid with FEMA.
In addition, victims affected by Hurricane Katrina can call a FEMA toll-free number to register for a wide range of federal and voluntary disaster assistance programs. Victims should register for disaster assistance by calling the FEMA toll-free registration number: 1-800-621-FEMA (1-800-621-3362) or 1-800-462-7585 for the speech or hearing impaired. To register with FEMA online please visit http://www.fema.gov.
For additional flood safety information, please visit the PEMA web site at www.pema.state.pa.us.***To add a Press Release please email me at pa.kd.info@gmail.com, Thank you!***
