Fractured eyebar member from the Pt. Pleasant Bridge. The eyebar contained an initial flaw, due to stress corrosion, one-eighth of an inch long.The eyebar then fractured in a brittle manner with the crack extending rapidly from the initial flaw. The entire 1700-foot long bridge collapsed in less than 60 seconds.
